The best-dressed celebrities at the 2023 VMAs: Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, more

At the MTV VMAs, the fashion’s as loud as the music — and 2023’s red carpet looks were no exception.

On Sept. 12, celebrities descended on New Jersey’s Prudential Center wearing everything from daring cutouts to dazzling sequins.

See all the best-dressed stars from this year’s Video Music Awards below.

In a move seemingly tailor-made — make that Taylor-made — to get Swifties speculating about a release date for “Reputation (Taylor’s Version),” this year’s most-nominated artist went edgier than usual for the evening, hitting the pink carpet in an asymmetrical black Atelier Versace gown studded with the luxury label’s iconic gold Medusa hardware.

A sprinkling of sparkling chains and diamonds from Anita Ko, Maria Tash and Joseph Saidian and Sons upped the glam factor further.

This might be the best the “Single Soon” singer’s ever looked. Gomez was gorgeous in this hand-beaded scarlet halter gown from Oscar de la Renta, which featured a skirt formed from delicate floral tendrils.

Diamonds from Giardini Segreti, including a pair of beautiful butterfly earrings, finished off the star’s secret garden-worthy style.

The “Vampire” songstress tends to mix punk-inspired pieces with preppy ones in her everyday life — but when it comes to the red carpet, we think she looks her absolute best in simple, streamlined silhouettes like this one.

Studded with over 150,000 Swarovski crystals, Rodrigo’s shimmering Ludovic de Saint Sernin tank dress hit all the right notes, and the star smartly kept her accessories and beauty look minimal so as not to complete with all that shine.

No bad hair days here! Cardi would be ready to fix any mane mishaps backstage with this armor-inspired Dilara Findikoglu gown crafted from thousands of hair clips. (Imagine how heavy it must be!)

A set of matching cuffs completed the look — and the “Up” rapper’s husband, Offset, even coordinated in hair clips of his own.

Speaking of cute couples, the “Outer Banks” star and the “Penthouse” singer made a marvelous match in red looks from Michael Kors and Mônot, respectively. Stokes was even kind enough to wear his shirt unbuttoned so his lady love wouldn’t be the only one with a low-cut neckline. Now that’s love!

Equal parts sexy and sophisticated, the “Sweetest Pie” rapper’s strapless Brandon Blackwood corset gown fit her like a glove. A whopping 129 carats of Jacob & Co. bling was the icing on the cake.

Shakira

This year’s Video Vanguard Award honoree looked good as gold in this backless chainmail creation by Atelier Versace that clung to her every curve.

Shakira brought along sons Milan and Sasha as her dates for the big night, with both boys sporting baroque-print Versace tracksuits.

Make no bones about it — the “Best Friend” rapper looked smashing in this hot-off-the-runway number from Area. Wilma Flintstone, but make it fashion.

VMAs viewers may remember the Italian rockers’ revealing ensembles wound up censored during last year’s broadcast, which might explain why they opted for more covered-up (but still edgy!) outfits from Rick Owens this time around. At any rate, they looked fantastic.

Stephen Sanchez

Unquestionably the best-dressed man on the VMAs carpet, “Until I Found You” singer Sanchez looked dapper in his powder blue Gucci bow blouse and bamboo-handled Diana bag.

The TikTok-famous sisters looked elegant beyond their years in a duo of perfectly tailored strapless dresses; Charli wore a bow-topped midi by ShuShu/Tong, while Dixie dazzled in a sculptural Maticevski column.
